What ManyChat's AI can and can't do for a coach

ManyChat is very good at rule-based Instagram DM flows, such as sending a link when someone comments a keyword. Its AI layer can answer questions and push towards a goal, but ManyChat's own help pages call it a beta and say it is "not fully deterministic". Pricing is by Active Contacts, so cost rises with audience size, not calls booked. Whether it can qualify a high-ticket lead is something to test yourself.
You run Instagram, you have seen ManyChat everywhere, and you want to know what its AI will actually do for your DMs before you pay for it.
ManyChat is excellent at rule-based Instagram flows, such as sending a link when someone comments a keyword, and it is cheap to start. Its AI layer can answer questions and steer a chat towards a goal, but ManyChat's own help pages call it a beta and say it is "not fully deterministic". Whether it can qualify a high-ticket lead the way you would is something to test yourself.
This is not a head-to-head. For that, see our SetterFlo vs ManyChat comparison. Here we stick to what ManyChat's AI does, what it costs, and where we would test it hard.
We make SetterFlo, an AI setter that competes with ManyChat for some coaches, so read this knowing that. Everything below about ManyChat comes from its own pricing page and help centre, listed at the bottom. We have not run ManyChat's AI on a live account, so where we raise a doubt, it is a doubt and not a finding.
1. What ManyChat does well
ManyChat is a tool you build yourself. You choose the trigger, write the messages and decide what happens next. For a coach, the classic use is comment to DM: someone comments a keyword under a reel, and ManyChat sends them your link or lead magnet in their inbox.
That part is mature, and it is why so many coaches use it. Its free plan includes up to 4 active automations and starts from more than 60 ready-made templates, according to its pricing page. Paid plans remove the limit on automations and the "Powered by Manychat" line that otherwise appears the first time you message a contact.
It also covers far more than Instagram. Its pricing page lists WhatsApp, Messenger, TikTok, Telegram, SMS and email, with fewer channels on the lower plans. If you sell on several channels, that range counts for a lot.
On the AI side, ManyChat's help centre describes four things:
- AI Replies. The AI spots a question in your DMs or comments and answers it from a Knowledge library you fill with text about your business.
- AI Comments. It replies to positive comments on your posts or reels, mirroring your tone. It does not work on Stories or Lives.
- AI Goals. After it answers, it tries to move the person towards a goal you set, such as getting a link sent, asking for a follow, or qualifying a lead.
- AI Step. A step you can place inside a flow you have built yourself.
The AI features need a paid plan and, per the help pages, currently work on Instagram only.
2. What it costs, and why contacts matter
ManyChat prices by Active Contacts. Its pricing page defines an Active Contact as a real person you interact with during a monthly billing period, through a message or an automation. How many messages you swap does not matter. One person counts as one contact for the month.
Each plan includes a number of contacts. Go over, and your automations do not switch off. You pay a small fee for each extra contact. The table below uses ManyChat's published monthly prices and our own arithmetic.
| Example: contacts in a month | Essential ($17, 250 included, $0.10 per extra) | Pro ($39, 2,500 included, $0.05 per extra) | Business ($99, 7,500 included, $0.025 per extra) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 250 | $17 | $39 | $99 |
| 1,000 | $92 | $39 | $99 |
| 2,500 | $242 | $39 | $99 |
| 5,000 | $492 | $164 | $99 |
Two things stand out. The cheapest plan stops being cheapest quickly: at 5,000 contacts, Pro comes to $164 ($39 plus 2,500 extra contacts at $0.05), while Business is $99 for up to 7,500. And the bill follows your audience, not your results. A reel that does well fills your DMs with new people and raises that month's cost, whether or not any of them book a call.
Watch out for: the page defaults to annual prices, which are lower ($14, $29 and $69 a month for the first three paid plans). The table uses monthly billing. ManyChat also says prices exclude tax and depend on your billing country, so check the final figure at checkout.
A second watch-out is the AI price. ManyChat's pricing page lists AI on Pro and above, but its AI product page describes it as a $29 add-on to Pro. We could not reconcile the two, so we give no price for the AI. Ask ManyChat or check your own checkout before you budget.
3. Follow to DM
Follow to DM is the feature coaches ask about most. It sends a message to someone shortly after they follow your Instagram account. You can set the delay between 5 and 10 minutes, or send it straight away.
ManyChat's help page lists the limits plainly:
- It is a beta, and access does not depend on your ManyChat plan.
- Meta decides which accounts are eligible, reviews eligibility weekly and can remove it later.
- It runs once per follower. If they unfollow and follow again, it does not run twice.
- Meta allows one Follow to DM message per person per week.
- The follower has to reply or tap a button in that first message before you can send the rest. That opens a 24-hour window.
So it is a good way to say hello, and a poor way to hold a long conversation by itself. If you need the sequence to continue, you need the follower to answer first.
Watch out for: your account may simply not be eligible. ManyChat says a pop-up tells you so, and that Meta, not ManyChat, controls the decision.
You may have heard that ManyChat's AI can write the first message to a new follower. We found no ManyChat page that says so. Follow to DM sends a message you write, and the AI features answer messages and comments people send you. If the two have been joined since, its help centre is where it would show.
4. What it may not do: qualify and hold context
This is where we have opinions, and where you should run your own test.
ManyChat's help pages say its AI "automatically qualifies leads", and AI Goals include a goal for capturing lead information. So ManyChat does claim it, and we are not saying it fails. We are saying a high-ticket coach should check it against their own bar.
Qualifying a coaching lead usually means more than collecting an email address. You want to know whether they can afford the price, how serious they are, and whether you solve their problem. A set goal that gathers details is not the same as a conversation that adapts to what the person says. We have not tested how far ManyChat's goes.
Holding context is the second question, and the help pages say little. The AI answers from the Knowledge library you write, so it knows what you tell it and nothing else. If you edit an entry mid-conversation, the change only applies from the next new conversation. The AI stops waiting for a reply after 10 hours. Whether it remembers what a lead said two messages ago, we do not know. A fair test: give it a long chat where the lead states a budget early, changes topic, then comes back to it. See if the reply still fits.
5. Will it sound like a bot?
Possibly, depending on setup. ManyChat lets you set an AI Role, a Brand Voice and Persona, and Guardrails. When you first set it up, it scans the bio and recent comments on your connected Instagram page to pre-fill those three fields, and ManyChat says that is a starting point, not a final version.
Its own FAQ is candid about the limits. One question reads, "Why does the AI still sound wrong after I set Behavior?" The advice is to be more specific, for example "Keep replies under 3 sentences. Don't use emojis", and to test in its Playground. On guardrails, it says they reduce off-topic answers but that the AI "may still occasionally answer outside those boundaries".
That candour is a point in ManyChat's favour. It also tells you what you are signing up for, which is a tool you keep tuning. Whether your leads can tell is for you to find out. Take ten real questions from your inbox, run them through the Playground, and read the answers as a stranger would. If you want a longer read on tone, see whether leads will know it's AI.
Watch out for: ManyChat says the AI recognises "a wide range of languages", but also that very short messages or similar languages can make it misread which one is in use. If you sell in Spanish as well as English, test both.
6. When ManyChat is the right pick
ManyChat is the better choice if:
- You want to start cheaply. There is a free plan, and the paid plans start at $17 a month on monthly billing.
- You sell on more than Instagram, such as WhatsApp, TikTok or Messenger.
- You like building and are happy to maintain your own flows.
- Your main need is keyword and comment automations, plus broadcasts, not full conversations.
- Meta has given your account Follow to DM and you want to use it.
It is a weaker fit if you want something that handles a whole conversation and books a qualified lead for you, with no building on your side. That is the job SetterFlo is built for, but we cost more, and we only work on Instagram. Our comparison page sets the two side by side, and our roundup of AI appointment setters puts ManyChat alongside eleven other tools.
If you are weighing cost across tools, what an Instagram appointment setter costs is the longer read. If your worry is account risk, is Instagram DM automation safe is the one to read first.
Try it before you trust it
ManyChat has a free plan and a 14-day trial on the paid ones. Set a Brand Voice, then run ten real questions from your inbox through the Playground. That will tell you more than any write-up, ours included.
One thing we could not settle is what the AI costs on its own. Ask ManyChat before you budget. If you would rather not build any of this, our pilot is open, with 6 of 10 places left.
Questions
Does ManyChat have AI?
Yes. ManyChat's help centre lists AI Replies, AI Comments, AI Goals, AI Behavior and an AI Step you can place inside a flow. The always-on features work on Instagram only, and ManyChat says they are in beta. Its pricing page shows AI on the Pro plan and above.
How much does ManyChat cost for 5,000 contacts?
Example, on monthly billing and before tax: Pro is $39 for 2,500 Active Contacts plus $0.05 for each extra one, so 5,000 contacts comes to $164. Business is $99 for up to 7,500, so it is cheaper at that size. ManyChat says final prices depend on your billing country.
What is an Active Contact on ManyChat?
ManyChat defines it as a real person you interact with during a monthly billing period, whether through a message or an automation. It does not matter how many messages you exchange. One person counts as one Active Contact for the month.
What is ManyChat's Follow to DM?
It is an Instagram trigger that sends a message to someone shortly after they follow you. ManyChat's help page says it is in beta, Meta decides which accounts are eligible, and it runs once per follower. The follower has to reply or tap a button before the rest of the automation can send.
Can ManyChat's AI qualify leads for a coach?
ManyChat's help pages say its AI can qualify leads, and its Capture leads goal collects contact information. Whether that matches how you qualify a high-ticket lead is something to test with sample conversations. We have not tested it, so treat it as a question to check.
Does ManyChat sound like a bot?
It depends on how you set it up and what the lead asks. ManyChat's own help page has a question on why the AI can still sound wrong after you set its voice, and advises being more specific and testing in its Playground. Read the replies as a stranger would.
Can ManyChat book calls?
ManyChat's pricing page does not list a native calendar booking integration. You can send a booking link in a flow. Whether a lead then books is up to them, so check how you will track that.
Is ManyChat free?
It has a free plan with 25 Active Contacts a month, up to 4 active automations and ManyChat branding on messages. Paid plans start at $17 a month on monthly billing. AI features are on Pro and above, per its pricing page.
